The Consumer Commission has recalled Similac Alimentum 400-gram baby formula. This after the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) warned of bacterial infections from the use of the product.
As a result, there is an investigation currently underway globally.
In the interim, manufacturer, Abbott Laboratories has announced a voluntary recall of potentially affected product Similac Alimentum® powdered formula.
Reports of four cases where infants experienced symptoms of Cronobacter Sakazakii and Salmonella in the US have caused concern.
Symptoms include diarrhoea, fever and stomach cramps.
The baby formula manufactured in the lab’s Sturgis, Michigan facility is exported to other countries. Parents and caregivers are urged to return the product for a full refund.
There have been no reports of illness from infants and children in South Africa.
Affected products include the batch numbers 27938z26 and 29284Z26, and the manufacturing dates are March and May 2021, with an expiration date of 1 April 2022, or after.
Cronobacter bacteria can cause severe, life-threatening infections or meningitis an inflammation of the membranes that protect the brain and spine.
Salmonella are a group of bacteria that can cause gastrointestinal illness and fever called salmonellosis. Most people with salmonellosis develop diarrhoea, fever and abdominal cramps.
