Back in January this year, the City of Johannesburg unleashed 1 800 metro police officers onto the streets of Johannesburg to deal with lawlessness in the CBD.
This was all done as part of Operation Buya Mthetho. Looking back on the past two months, Thomas And Skhumba ask Kaya 959 listeners if they’ve seen any improvements in terms of lawlessness in the CBD?
Anonymous, who works in the CBD says there is a tremendous difference. “I’ve experienced people who get mugged when they just get off the taxis. However, now with the JMPD present, we’re seeing a tremendous difference where people feel it’s made a difference. It’ll take a while for people to feel confident just to walk around with your bag.”
Another listener says she still doesn’t feel safe even with the cops present. “I would like to say I don’t feel safe whenever I’m in Jozi. Two weeks back I was in small streets and I saw people robbing someone. A block away from where I was there were cops,” she shares.
Other listeners shared their experiences on social media:
Yes I've seen them, BT they're just standing on the streets, following each other in groups of about 5 people & just playing with their phones, whilst things are happening right under their noses, hayi visibility is there BT working Dololo 🤷
