Yesterday, the City of Johannesburg’s Emergency Services battled an underground fire that broke out at the corner of Ntemi Pilisio and Anderson Streets in the CBD.
Michael Sun, Joburg MMC for Environment Infrastructure Service Department, said City Power received word about the fire at approximately 7:00 on Monday.
According to City Power, The fire is affecting approximately three kilometers of underground electricity cabling.
In the Morning Show today Thomas and Skhumba asked: “Loadshedding aside, does your area have any electricity issues?”
Simon, who’s a resident of Diepsloot shares: “I’m a resident of Diepsloot. The biggest challenge in my area is illegal connections. People build many rooms but they don’t buy electricity. Imagine 29 rooms that use electricity that is legally connected. Those who got shacks in their backyard, also contribute badly. In one yard, it’s like a location. Sometimes we spend seven days without electricity.”
Khumo says she’s been without electricity for 3 months now. “We have not had electricity in 3mnths now transformer exploded in our area. Sad thing a second transformer exploded 2nd street away last week.”
Residents from Kagiso in the Krugersdorp area voiced their concern about load reduction which was implemented two years ago.
