Thomas and Skhumba hang out in-studio with one of Mzansi’s most talented entertainers Thembi Seete. She opens up about her friendship with Lebo Mathosa, early childhood memories, being independent, and raising her son.
Her fondest childhood memories
Thembi grew up in Sebokeng, she was raised by her Uncle and Aunt.
“I learned how to become a woman there – they had very strict principles and I’m grateful for that experience. I grew up with a large family, it taught me how to become a team player.
“My mom managed to buy a house in Soweto. You have to have the Kasi in you to survive. We then moved to Hillbrow and the pieces to the puzzle came together,” she says.
On meeting Lebo Mathosa
“When I first met Lebo I didn’t know that such people existed. It was rare to meet someone powerful like that.
“After a couple of years, we were in the same group and we were in the same school. L&T is Lebo and Thembi before Boom Shaka. It kept us busy after school, we were imitating other artists,” shares Thembi.
“Lebo taught me how to be independent.”
Thembi says that Lebo taught her how to be an independent woman.
“She was so amazing and so smart – she used to tell me to own the masters to all my songs.”
Finding out about Lebo’s passing
Thembi was in Cape Town when she found out Lebo’s untimely passing.
“I was getting ready and I got a call from Hlomla asking If I was okay.
“Jabulile also called to ask if I was alright and it started feeling weird. Then she told me that Lebo had passed on. That was the end of the day for me.”
On raising her son
The actress wants her son, Dakalo, to be free to open up to her about everything.
“I am teaching my son to communicate and to be free. Once you lay that foundation, your child will never be scared to open up. And once you have established that you know that your child will survive.”
