Point of View with Phemelo Motene is joined by social-cultural commentator Bongani Mahlangu to discuss the challenges facing the youth in the creative sector.
Despite the odds stacked against the youth, Bongani believes that there is hope
The young creatives and the odds stacked against them right now “if you are talented enough and you understand your talent. You can always fall back on the talent that is yours.”
He says one of the biggest challenges facing young creatives is “the managing resources, money in particular.”
Because a lot of artists are exposed to a lot of money in a short space of time, “they find it difficult to manage that money.”
He explains: “One of the problems from one generation to another is thinking you’ll always be popular and not always make money.
“A lot of artists have been struggling during these last two years of Covid-19. Only a few of them are trying to come back now. Most of them are afraid to open up because they might find themselves making headlines.”
In as much as there are many young artists enjoying success, Bongani is concerned that not enough light is shed on the challenges facing the country today.
“From high unemployment rate and corruption. I find that today’s musicians only want to sing about nice things and not confront the issues that are facing people on a daily basis,” he adds.
