The Kaya Drive team was rocked today by the shocking revelation that there are some adults who can’t do dishes.
When it comes to washing dishes the good old fashioned way that is, by hand. Doing the dishes may seem like a small thing, a basic skill that every adult and it seems teenager should be capable of.
But, judging by the number of ways people wash their dirty dishes, it might not be a skill everyone nails.
Take the British for example who wash their dishes and don’t rinse them off after. Yup, people in the UK let their soapy dishes dry without rinsing off the dirty dish water.
Then there’s the little known fact that most men in South Africa can’t do dishes because patriarchy has them believing it’s a “woman’s job”.
Why does doing the dishes seems like such a chore?
Some of the most common fights in relationships revolve around dirty dishes in the sink and who does and doesn’t do them.
Then comes the squabbles over how they do the dishes. To soak or not to soak? How much dishwashing liquid do you put in the washing up water?
Do you add a capful of bleach to the water or not? Hot water or cold?
How to stack the clean dishes on the drying rack?
Do you wipe the dishes with a cloth after or leave them to air dry?
Doesn’t sound so basic anymore does it?
Sponges, scourers, and which ones work best for different types of glassware, ceramic dishes and non-stick pots and pans?
Washing up isn’t rocket science they say, try saying that to the people who find washing dishes therapeutic.
If all else fails, one could always invest in a dishwasher, but then what does one do when there’s loadshedding?
