Employees at Sibanye-gold Stillwater’s operations rejected the miner’s last settlement offer of R850 per year for three years on Tuesday.
The unions said the R300 million CEO Neal Froneman earned in 2021 fuelled their commitment to press for above-inflation salary hikes.
On Wednesday, the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (Amcu) and the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM), which together represent around 25,000 of Sibanye’s 31,000 employees, started their seventh week of strike action.

Kaya Biz with Gugulethu Mfuphi spoke to Daniel Banepile, NUM (National Union of Mineworkers) President to discuss the worker’s demands.
“The manner in which the company has written their letter in terms of requesting a meeting was that us going to a meeting is to confirm the offer of R850 now, it was kind of condescending and that we attend that meeting if we agree to the offer. We responded to them by saying that members of Driefonteinkloof and Bretrix have rejected the offer as presented before them.”
“Now, in line with their offer, it was known therefore that it wasn’t possible for us to engage further than that.”
“However, we are still open to negotiating with the company if the company is willing to engage openly with us with our mandate which says they will give workers R1 100 living allowance, and 6% for tthe supervisors, that is the demand from our members and that is still the mandate.” says Banepile
