South Africa recorded a 5% increase for sexual offences between October and December last year.
Police Minister Bheki Cele revealed the figure while releasing crime statistics for the third quarter of 2020.
Cele says 12,218 people were raped between October and December last year.
Over 4,900 of the rape incidents took place at the home of the victim or the home of the rapist.

129 life sentences handed down
The minister says 570 were domestic violence related and 547 of cases in this category involved female victims and 23 were males.
“Let me also remind the nation that GBV and femicide remains a priority crime for SAPS. We are on a daily basis improving our service and responses at station level.
“We are motivated that numerous life sentences have been handed down for crimes committed against women and children. In the three months of reporting period, the FSC [Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offence] secured 129 life sentences,” Cele said.

Murder in the country is also on the rise. SA saw an increase of 6,6% during the three months of reporting.
