On August 19, the Department of Basic Education proposed the cancelation of the school October holiday.

The proposal to cancel the October holiday was readdressed on Friday, 27 August.
The Council of Education Ministers (CEM) discussed feedback received from stakeholders about the amended 2021 school calendar.
The CEM presented three options to Minister Angie Motshekga.
The statement only reports on the outcome agreed to.
The October holiday will happen as planned.
The CEM recommended that each district and school-level recover the number school days lost.
The CEM also recommended that the plan for the recovery of lost school days be reasonable.
