Today marks 42 years since anti-apartheid activist Solomon Mahlangu died.
Mahlangu was sentenced to death by hanging on 2 March 1978 after being found guilty on two counts of murder and three charges under the Terrorism Act. He was one of 134 political prisoners convicted and sentenced to death.
SA history website states: “On 6 April 1993 he was reinterred at the Mamelodi Cemetery, where a plaque states his supposed last words: ‘My blood will nourish the tree that will bear the fruits of freedom. Tell my people that I love them. They must continue the fight.’”
Commemoration of Mahlangu’s life
The African National Congress has paid tribute to Mahlunga with ANC Treasurer General, Paul Mashatile, saying that the democracy that South Africa enjoys now came at a very heavy price.
Mashatile said many young people lost their lives during the fight for liberation.
He was speaking at the Kgoshi Mampuru correctional facility this morning where the ANC is commemorating the life of the anti-apartheid activist.
Mashatile says this morning’s event will be followed by a wreath laying ceremony at Mahlangu’s grave site in Mamelodi.
#SolomonMahlangu has been trending on Twitter since the early hours of today.
Many South Africans paid homage to the anti-apartheid activist who died at age 19.
