Every year on 25 November the country and the world embarks on the 16 days of activism campaign against GBV and child abuse.
This year marks the 30th anniversary of the global campaign which is focused on raising awareness about violence against women and children.
The 2021 campaign will highlight the issue of femicide or the gender-related killing of women. Launching the campaign in 1991, the Center for Women’s Global Leadership (CWGL) aimed to call for the end to GBV.
Running annually from 25 November to 10 December, the 16 days of activism campaigns in South Africa has kicked off with multiple GBV activations for the year.
Under the theme, “The year of Charlotte Mannya Maxeke – moving from awareness to accountability” many women’s rights organisation have begun marches. International Day Against Violence Against Women is on the 25 November.
The 10 December marks International Human Rights Day.
In SA People Opposing Women Abuse will continue its ongoing support towards victims of abuse.
The organisation hit back against the criminal justice system in the country for failing GBV survivors.
According to POWA many survivors don’t receive sufficient assistance when they report their cases.
A #NotInMyName march will take place this Friday from Church Square in Pretoria CBD. The march will be held in conjunction with Women In Action.
FemNet and WomanKind have a new podcast series out to initiate an end to femicide.
