The SA government and the German Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development are collaborating to promote the development of green hydrogen in South Africa.
As reported in November 2021 by Statista, South Africa is one of the largest emitters of carbon dioxide worldwide.
This is because of our reliance on coal.
The collaboration between South African and Germany aims to:
- Support the development of a favourable strategic and regulatory framework for a green hydrogen economy in South Africa
- Coordinate the important contributions of different government departments and stakeholders for such a framework
- Enable relevant actors to build a green hydrogen export economy
- Enhance capacity and knowledge of South African stakeholders in the green hydrogen and Powerfuels sector
- Mitigate potential implications of a green hydrogen and Powerfuels economy on the environment, society, and the economy.
The Deutshe Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) will work along with the Presidency on the project.
“The German Ministry will support the project with at least 12.5 million euros in funding,” says Minister in Presidency, Mondli Gungubele.
The promotion of the development of green hydrogen in South Africa can assist in lowering emissions.
Green hydrogen is generated by renewable energy such as solar and wind.
