The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) has proposed a reduced speed limit for SA. Suggesting the speed limit drops by 10km/h, the plan is put forward to align the country’s speed limit to meet the global standard.
South Africa has signed the United Nation’s (UN) Decade of Action for Road Safety 2021-2030 plan to halve road fatalities by 2030.
If passed, this would mean the maximum speed limit in SA would move from 120km/h to 110km/h.
Minimum speeds of 60km/h in residential areas would be reduced to 50km/h.
The proposal also falls in line with the overall 365 campaign which focuses on reducing speeds.
In a bid to make the country’s roads safer and decrease the number of road fatalities, the proposal may be met with open arms.
Earlier this week Transport Minister, Fikile Mbalula said that efforts to eliminate road accidents and carnage on roads will need to be amped up.
He shared a statement after the fatal minibus crash earlier this week which claimed the lives of 8 children in Mpumalanga.
Fatalities from the festive season were shared earlier this year and excessive speeding was one of the reason behind crashes.
A total of 605 drivers were arrested for driving at excessive speeds of between 190 km per hour to well above 220 km per hour. The highest speedster was arrested in Limpopo travelling at 225 km an hour.
This was during the 42-days of the festive season’s Arrive Alive campaign.
