Two prisoners have been rearrested after they allegedly broke into a house, kidnapped a baby, and hijacked a bakkie.
Johannesburg Metro Police Department spokesperson Wayne Minnaar said the men escaped from the Leeuwkop prison where they were serving sentences of 10 years and 30 years for murders which they committed.
“After escaping the suspects went to a house in Fourways, entering the property via the back door. A domestic worker saw them from inside and locked the back door. It is alleged that the suspects kicked the door down, as well as a second door inside the house,” he said.
Minnaar said the men took money from the lady of the house and kidnapped her four-month-old daughter.
“The suspects ran off with the child as security guards arrived at the house, they then hijacked a White Toyota double cab and drove towards Diepsloot with another vehicle chasing behind, where they drove into the ditch,” he said.

Baby returned to family
Just before 1pm, police were patrolling near Diepsloot when they spotted the Toyota double-cab driving at high speed.
“The vehicle drove into a ditch at R511 and Plum Street and officers saw residents attacking the men,” Minnaar said.
Police established that the men had escaped from prison. The two suspects were arrested and detained at Diepsloot Police Station.
Minnaar said the baby’s father fetched her and took her to the Fourways Hospital.
“Her condition has not yet been ascertained. Correctional Services were also called to fetch the suspects at the police station,” he said.
Meanwhile, the JMPD has continued with their bylaw enforcement operations throughout the city.
Officers were in the CBD on Thursday where they confiscated goods from street traders.
“Please ensure that you comply with City of Joburg bylaws and instructions given by JMPD authorised officers. If not, one will be guilty of an offense and liable for a fine,” the JMPD warned.
