Limpopo police are hunting down four suspects who escaped from custody at the weekend.
Mohammed Nassir (29), Stanley Chiteya (38), Dexter Tinashe (26) and Joseph Hlongwane (37) were all awaiting trial when they managed to flee from police cells at 9pm on Sunday.
Nassir, a Bangladesh national, was arrested in January after he allegedly murdered his partner and child.
According to reports, Nasir, his partner Chantelle Ester Ash and their infant daughter were booked into a room at a lodge in Limpopo.
They stayed overnight and when an employee at the lodge went to check on them in the morning, she found the bodies of Ash and the baby girl.
Nasir was arrested in Brixton days later after he fled the Limpopo lodge.
Door not locked
Chiteya and Tinashe, both Zimbabwean nationals were nabbed for a business robbery in November last year, while Hlongwane is from SA and was arrested for a house robbery and rape earlier this month.
The escapees were kept in a cell with seven other suspects.
It is alleged that the inner solid door was not locked and the men managed to cut through the roof in the exercise room. The remainder of the men did not escape and informed officials on duty.
“The suspects were arrested for serious and violent crimes and are considered dangerous. Anyone with information on the escapees’ whereabouts are urged to contact the police,” said police spokesperson, Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo.
Police appeal to anyone with information about these escapees to contact the investigating officer, Lieutenant Colonel Sekanka on 082 565 8505 or Crime Stop number 08600 10111 or the nearest police or My SAPS App.
In July, three prisoners were re-arrested after they escaped enroute to the Mokopane Regional Court. Initially, four men escaped but one is yet to be found.
Mojapelo said the men managed to disarm a police officer and escaped. He said they hijacked two trucks. Clifford Matonhori, Figos Madisha and John Fine were re-arrested days later while Dennis Hove is still on the run.
