While many South Africans will lament that there’s nothing to be proud of as a country, hearing a packed stadium singing the National Anthem for the first time since Covid-19 does warm the heart.
A full Loftus Stadium echoed with the South African National Anthem as the Springboks took on Wales in the second test.
Not only was it a sight for sore eyes but hearing the words to Nkosi Sikelel’ Afrika reverberate around the stadium was an uplifting message to citizens during these tough times.
With very little to celebrate as the country suffers from rolling blackouts thanks to Eskom and massive hikes in petrol, electricity and food, many South Africans are feeling weighed down by the financial implications.
Sport has always been one of the things that unites the country, as we witnessed during the 2010 World Cup which was held here.
Was it enough to give citizens some hope that things will get better? Maybe not. It will take more than this feel-good moment to turn things around, but it was a reminder of how far we’ve come and how long the journey still is.
The Springboks went on to beat Wales 32-29, falling behind the visitors in the first half by 3 points to 18.
