The academic year has begun at many institutions of higher learning across the country.
But, the year started off on a bad note as many students are protesting against financial exclusion.
This has led to police having to be on high alert across the country following the spread of demonstrations at the institutions.
The demonstrations are happening at the following universities; Wits, the University of Johannesburg, the University of the Free State, and the University of Pretoria.
Students say they are tired of empty promises.
In December 2017, former President Jacob Zuma announced that in 2018, free higher education would be provided to all new first year students from families that earn less than R350,000 per year. But, the government seems to be failing on its promise.
Yesterday, President Cyril Ramaphosa said the government will continue to find solutions to fund education.
President Ramaphosa says the issue of education remains a priority for government.

Wits University SRC President Mpendulo Mfeka says they will not stop protesting until all their demands for free education are met.
Addressing students outside the university, Mfeka said they also want the government to remove all colonial statues at the institution.
Students have been demonstrating on campus linked to the alleged financial exclusion of some students.
The SRC has been calling for the institution to allow students with historical debt to continue with their studies.
Mfeka says they cannot stop now because there is still no permanent solution to their problems.
