The Department of Correctional Services has slammed a video that allegedly shows inmates assaulting a warden.
Officials say the clip being shared on the internet is fake.
The video shows three “prisoners” grabbing the warden, who struggles to fight them off.
“South Africa [is] a free country… Free for everyone!!!” one Twitter user remarked.
Another video shows an inmate carrying a gun and knife.

Contravention of the Correctional Services Act
The department’s spokesperson Singabakho Nxumalo says they are aware of the videos making the rounds on social media.
“DCS can categorically state that this is all an act and nothing closer to reality,” he said in a statement.
Nxumalo added that officials did not give permission for the videos to be recorded.
“As a department, we have processes in place where creative artists are able to approach us requesting either the use of our uniform and the property belonging to the state.”
He says the clips contravene Section 124 and 125 of the Correctional Services Act.
The act states that any unauthorised person who wears or uses a departmental uniform or distinctive badge is guilty of an offence and could face prison time.
Officials to take action
The department says it will be taking legal action as the videos undermine their authority.
“The person behind the videos has been identified and the department is engaging with SAPS for the law to take its course.”
