Wits University has confirmed that its SRC President Aphiwe Mnyamana has been suspended.
This after Aphiwe tweeted at 20h31 on Monday, 06 March that he had been suspended, and was awaiting instruction from the SRC’s legal advisor, Advocate Dali Mpofu.
The university claimed the reasons for Aphiwe’s suspension were of a serious nature, citing that the SRC President had a number of violations against him.
Further to this, Wits said Aphiwe had failed to attend his suspension hearing which was scheduled for Monday.
“Mr Aphiwe Mnyamana failed to appear at a suspension hearing scheduled today despite having been provided with ample opportunity to make representations at such hearing.
The allegations against him are of a serious nature and relate to conduct that infringed on the rights of others, resulted in damage to property, and the intimidation of members of the University community, amongst other things.”
The SRC President will not be allowed to access any of the Wits’ precincts, participate in any university activities, nor engage in conduct which constitutes “student privileges” and will not be allowed to stay in Wits’ residences until the legal process is finalised.
Aphiwe’s suspension comes after a week of on-going student protests at Wits.
