Tshwane Mayor Dr Murunwa Makwarela has resigned.
This is in response to the City of Tshwane’s Office of the Chief Justice’s confirmation that the mayor’s bankruptcy rehabilitation certificate is a forgery.
Makwarela had his documents widely questioned for what appeared to be mistaken on them.
Makwarela was reinstated as the city’s mayor after providing the Tshwane City manager with what he presented as evidence that he had been rehabilitated and was in good standing to assume the position.

Among them was a document with the North Court of South Africa’s name on it, which doesn’t exist and was likely an effort to refer to the North Gauteng High Court in Pretoria.

The High Court in Gauteng confirmed on Friday morning, 10 March 2023 that a rehabilitation certificate Makwarela had issued to the City Manager was actually fake.
Mkwarela had been disqualified as a councillor after it was learnt that he had been declared insolvent. As per the law, anyone who has been declared insolvent cannot run for office.
