Toyota SA has suspended production after its Prospecton plant in Durban was affected by the KZN floods.
More than ten thousand new Toyota vehicles are submerged under water. These vehicles include the Hilux, Fortuner, Corolla Cross, Corolla Quest and Quantam models.
A week ago the plant announced that it had completed building and assembling 10,198 light motor vehicles.
The plant exports vehicles to more than 40 destinations in Europe and the African continent.
While measures for a safe start-up is in place, there are concerns about the impact the production halt will have on the company.
Toyota SA employs 7, 200 people at the Prospecton plant and with the retail motor industry still trying to recover from the Covid-19 pandemic, concerns are that job losses may result from the floods.
Motor Industry Staff Association (MISA) spokesperson, Sonja Carstens says its devastated by the floods and the impact it will have on staff.
