Thousands of motorists have been arrested since the start of December for speeding, drunk driving and other traffic offenses.
The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) said 2241 motorists were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol, speeding, driving without a license and permit violations.
This comes after a labour law expert shared that South African drivers could be fired for drunk driving depending on the industry they’re in.
As more holidaymakers embark on their destinations for the Christmas and New Year period, officials are preparing for the second peak of traffic volumes and more violations.
Authorities have amplified road blocks across the country and say the worst drunk driving offender was from Midrand, Johannesburg.
A male driver was arrested over the weekend on Lever and New Road in Midrand with an alcohol breath reading of 3.99mg/1000ml, which is 17 times the legal limit.
Apart from drinking and driving, speed remains a safety concern on the roads over the holiday period, with the highest speed violation being 191km/h in an 120km/h zone.
Since the start of December, the RTMC have conducted more than 188 roadblocks, and issued 100 960 fines.
