The 2022 matric pass rate is at 80.1%, a 3,7% improvement from the previous year.
The 2022 matric class passed their final exams with an 80.1% passing rate, which is a 3.7 percentage point increase from the 76.4% passing rate from the previous year.
With an 88.5% pass percentage, the Free State province earned the top spot for the third year in a row, while Limpopo was once again at the bottom of the list with a 72.1% rate.

Most passes were earned by students in Kwa-Zulu Natal, allowing candidates to enrol in bachelor’s degree programs.

Angie Motshekga, the basic education minister, praised the fact that none of South Africa’s provinces attained a pass percentage below 70% while speaking at the release of the 2022 National Senior Certificate (NSC) examination results on Thursday evening in Johannesburg.
“The provinces with the highest improvements are Kwa-Zulu Natal, Limpopo and the Eastern Cape. Again, the great work done in these three most rural provinces must be applauded,” she said.
