The suspect, Pethe Sara Simiao, who was wanted for the rape and murder of six-year-old Amantle Samane in Orlando East, Soweto, has been caught.
An immigration status check with the Home Affairs Department revealed that Simiao was living illegally in South Africa.
This comes after the community collaborated with the police on a three-day search for the undocumented foreigner, who was known in the Orlando East community at the time of the event.
The defendant is suspected of raping and strangling Amantle to death on Monday, October 21, in his rented cottage. Amantle’s body was found in the suspect’s shack, partially naked.
Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni has announced that police have begun an investigation into the harbouring of an illegal immigrant in relation with the murder of a 6-year-old boy in Soweto.
Mthombeni says it’s concerning that South Africans continue to allow people who are not documented to live in the homes.
