Two students who discovered flaws in the South African Social Security Agency’s (SASSA) payment system have urged the government to restart the entire grant system.
Joel Cedras and Veer Gosai, two first-year IT students from Stellenbosch University, told the Social Development Committee on Wednesday how easy it is to scam the system when applying for the R350 Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant. The students uncovered flaws in SASSA’s SRD computer system, which allows anyone to falsely apply using ID numbers.
Members of Parliament (MPs) have now called on SASSA to conduct an urgent investigation into the results presented by the two students.
SASSA was summoned before Parliament to account for suspicions of fraudulent behavior on the SRD application system.
Point of View with Phemelo Motene spoke to Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Social Development, Bridget Masango who expressed how the committee is committed to ensuring accountability within Sassa amid growing public concerns about the grant system.
