- The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a Yellow Level 1 warning for southern Gauteng on Monday as a surface trough brings wet weather across the interior.
- Heavy downpours, severe thunderstorms, and localized flooding threaten power supply, communications, and infrastructure in the province.
- Unsettled conditions ranging from cool to warm and hot temperatures will persist across central and eastern South Africa throughout the week.
A surface trough dominating the South African interior is set to deliver isolated to scattered showers and thunderstorms across central and eastern regions this week.
Temperatures across the affected provinces will fluctuate between cool, warm, and hot, with localized pockets experiencing very hot conditions.
On Monday, partly cloudy weather will prevail alongside widespread thundershowers concentrated in Mpumalanga, KwaZulu-Natal, and the Eastern Cape.
Gauteng residents face severe weather risks, particularly across the southern parts of the province, where SAWS has issued a Yellow Level 1 warning for severe thunderstorms.
Meteorological officials warn that intense localized downpours could trigger flash flooding, damage residential settlements and temporary structures, and cause temporary disruptions to local power supply and communication networks.
Beyond Gauteng, heightened severe weather warnings extend across eastern South Africa.
A Yellow Level 4 warning covers Limpopo’s south-central regions, the Mpumalanga Highveld, and western KwaZulu-Natal due to extreme downpours, hail, and excessive lightning threatening infrastructure.
Simultaneously, a Yellow Level 2 coastal warning remains active between Port Edward and Mtubatuba, alongside Level 1 alerts covering the eastern Free State, Mpumalanga’s south-west, and the Eastern Cape escarpment.
