South Africa has noted a 0.6% decline in the unemployment rate for the second quarter of 2022.
This comes as the Quarterly Labour Force Survey (QLFS) released the latest results which indicates that almost 650K jobs were gained between the first and second quarter of 2022.

In May, the QLFS shared that there was a 0.8% decrease in unemployment. In comparison to the latest figures, the first quarter only saw 370K new jobs were created.
Most new jobs were recorded in the Community and Social Services sector with 267 000 jobs noted here.
Trade accounted for 169 000 new opportunities, followed by Finance at 128 000 and Construction making up 104 000 jobs.
There were however marked job losses in the Manufacturing and Transport sectors of 73 000 and 54 000 respectively.
“The number of unemployed persons increased by 132 000 to 8 million in the second quarter of 2022, compared to the previous quarter. The number of discouraged jobseekers decreased by 183 000 and the number of people who were not economically active for reasons other than discouragement decreased by 452 000.”
The #unemployment rate among the Black African (37,8%) population group remains higher than the national average and other population groups.

According to the latest unemployment statistics, the country’s youth remains vulnerable with 4.8 million youth still without work.
The Eastern Cape ranked as the province with highest unemployment rate and black and coloured population groups were the most vulnerable in the labour market.
