South African motorists can expect some relief at the pumps this week as the price of petrol drops by R1.32/litre on Wednesday, 3 August.
While the drop is welcome, the DA is calling for a bigger decrease, saying the R1 respite simply isn’t enough.
The opposition party is calling for a R6 decrease, and wants the levies and taxes on the cost of fuel dropped altogether.
However, Minister for Mineral Resources and Energy, Gwede Mantashe has already announced the new fuel costs for the month of August.
Inland motorists who are currently paying R26.31/litre for 93 unleaded and R26.74/litre for 95 unleaded, will now pay R24.99 and R25.42 respectively.
The diesel price will drop by between 88 and 91-cents a litre, while paraffin will cost R1.44 less a litre.
This comes as the process to deregulate the cost of fuel has begun.
The decision to deregulate the petrol price has been opened to public comment. If passed, the move will allow fuel retailers to determine their own fuel prices, up to a certain limit.
