Police arrested six armed men following a shootout on the M2 highway in Johannesburg on Monday.
Thanks to the swift response by the Hawks Tactical Operational Management Section, an AK 47 rifle, two pistols, ammunition and two hijacked vehicles were recovered.
After receiving intelligence that the armed men were en-route to Johannesburg CBD to commit a crime, the Hawks assisted the Ekhuruleni District Tactical Team, Crime Intelligence, Tracker Connect, GTP Saturation Unit and Badboyz Security Response who were all searching for the suspects.
They were wanted in connection of multiple armed robberies in Johannesburg using a white Kia minibus.
The suspects were spotted on the M2 highway and a shootout ensued when an attempt was made to stop them.
Other vehicles were damaged as a result, due to the suspects crashing into multiple vehicles as they tried to escape.
Three men were arrested immediately, while the fourth attempted to hijack a Toyota bakkie and the fifth hid in the bushes.
The sixth was apprehended after he was found hiding in a manhole in the CBD.
Five of the suspects sustained gunshot wounds in the shootout and were taken to hospital under police guard.
The vehicle the men were using was hijacked in Heidelberg last month.
All six will be charged with attempted murder, hijacking, illegal possession of firearms and ammunition as well as possession of a stolen vehicle.
They will appear in court soon.
