The Pietermaritzburg High Court has handed down a substantial sentence to Sibusiso Ncengwa for his role in the assassination of former ANC Youth League Secretary-General Sindiso Magaqa.
Ncengwa received an effective 85-year prison sentence, equivalent to two life terms, after pleading guilty to a litany of charges directly linked to the politically charged murder.
The judgment, delivered today, marks a crucial step towards justice for Magaqa, who was tragically gunned down on July 13, 2017, in uMzimkhulu, KwaZulu-Natal.
The assassination of Sindiso Magaqa sent shockwaves across the nation. On that fateful day in July 2017, Magaqa was with two other ANC councillors, Jabulile Mzizi and Nonhlanhla Ndovela, when their vehicle was ambushed. Reports from the time indicate that a hail of bullets was unleashed upon their car. While Magaqa succumbed to his injuries weeks later in hospital, Mzizi and Ndovela survived the attack with serious injuries.
Ncengwa’s guilty plea encompassed multiple serious offenses, including murder, two counts of attempted murder, malicious damage to property, and several charges related to the unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition.
