An exclusive investigation has uncovered the shocking state of the female ward at the once prestigious Lenasia South District Hospital.
This comes after a relative of a patient admitted at the hospital alerted Kaya News after finding her loved one in a wet bed multiple times.
According to the exclusive report, the hospital has fallen into a state of squalor with an overwhelming stench of urine and faeces smeared on the bathroom floors.
The kitchenette in the ward is filthy and has chunks of carrots floating in a blocked sink.
Medical and psychiatric patients are allegedly left with minimal supervision which means they are a danger to each other.
“This hospital doesn’t separate your medical patients from your psychiatric patients which to me is a concern. There is no monitoring and there is no management in that hospital. Patients are left to do as they please. They are not kept in their ward. They go inside the other patients’ rooms. They steal stuff from there,” the relative told Kaya News reporter Karinda Jagmohan.
The horror continues as some patients are said to be smoking freely in the bathrooms where toilets are clogged with tissues.
Kaya News says the Gauteng Health Department has confirmed that the matter is under investigation, describing the state of the public facility as unacceptable.
The Lenasia South District Hospital was established in 2020 with a R48-million investment, but today is surrounded by an overgrown lawn and is seemingly falling into a grave state of disrepair.
