SA’s unemployment rate fell to 31.9% in the third quarter.
According to numbers released on Tuesday by StatsSA, South Africa’s unemployment rate decreased from 32.6% in the second quarter of this year to 31.9% in the third.
Figures According to South Africa, the number of jobless individuals decreased to 7.849 million in the third quarter from 7.921 million in the second.

Employers who discourage people from looking for work are included in the broader definition of unemployment, which puts the percentage of unemployed workers at 41.2% in July–September as opposed to 42.1% in April–June.

“The number of unemployed persons decreased by 72 000 to 7,8 million during the same quarter. Additionally, the number of people who were not economically active for reasons other than discouragement decreased by 160 000 to 13,1 million, while the discouraged work-seekers decreased by 26 000 in the third quarter of 2023 compared to the second quarter of 2023. This resulted in a net decrease of 186 000 in the not economically active population.”

Total #employment increased by 399 000 to 16,7M in Q3:2023. This Q3:2023 increase is the 8th consecutive increase and second-largest increase since Q4:2021.
