The Consumer Price Index (CPI) in South Africa remained unchanged at 2.8 percent in May, according to the latest figures released by Statistics South Africa on Wednesday.
While the annual inflation rate held steady, the CPI did see a modest 0.2 percent increase between April and May.
Patrick Kelly, Chief Director at Statistics SA, highlighted the key driver behind this monthly uptick.
“Food and non-alcoholic beverages is the only category that contributed to the 0.2% monthly increase in the CPI,” Kelly stated.
He added that “The monthly change in the food and non-alcoholic beverages index was 1.1%, following a 1.3% rise in April.”

This data indicates that while overall price increases have stabilised on an annual basis, consumers are still experiencing upward pressure on their household budgets, particularly when it comes to essential food items.
The consistent rise in food and non-alcoholic beverage prices for the second consecutive month suggests a continuing trend in this sector.
