The South African Revenue Service (SARS) has condemned the attempted hit on their Advocate Coreth Naude who was shot 3 times on Thursday night, 18 July.
Adv. Naude was shot while driving into the parking lot of her hotel in uMhlanga, Durban. The hotel is near the Gateway shopping centre.
It is believed Adv. Naude was acting on behalf of SARS in an inquiry into high-profile Durban businesswoman Shauwn Mkhize. Mkhize, the owner of Royal AM Football Club as well as a number of other businesses, including low-cost housing projects and a cleaning company, has faced tax evasion and fraud charges several times.
Despite Mkhize maintaining that her record is clean and that she’s never been charged with fraud, the Durban businesswoman known as MaMkhize allegedly owes SARS millions in unpaid taxes.
In May, EWN reported that Mkhize owed SARS R37 million and could lose some of her assets, including her luxury vehicles.
Advocate Naude was shot in the upper body, neck and face and was rushed to hospital where she is reported to be in a serious condition in ICU.
Two men opened fire on the Advocate’s vehicle and KwaZulu-Natal police have opened a case of attempted murder.
In a statement, SARS Commissioner Edward Kieswetter expressed shock at this brazen act of intimidation.
“I condemn in the strongest possible terms, the attempted assassination of Advocate Coreth Naude.
This shocking act is intended to intimidate officers of the court to abandon the vital work they are performing in furtherance of our country’s legal system. It undermines the authority of the State.
Acts such as these and those who perpetrate it, must be resisted and defeated by all of us working together for the betterment of our country and ensuring that none are above the law.
SARS calls on our law enforcement agencies to act with speed in pursuing and arresting those who attempted to take the life of Advocate Naude. SARS wishes Advocate Naude a speedy recovery and wishes her family well. We will not be intimidated by such acts of crime and cowardice.”
