The United Nations General Assembly which took place on Wednesday (02 March) saw national representatives voting overwhelmingly for the reprimand of Russia, over its invasion of Ukraine.
The UN demanded that Moscow stop fighting and withdraw its military forces.
South Africa which was part of the vote, along with 141 of the assembly’s 193 members, abstained in the vote.

Thirty-five members of the UN, including SA and China, abstained while five countries including Russia, Syria and Belarus voted against the resolution.
Permanent Representative of South Africa to the United Nations, Mathu Joyini said South Africa is of the view that peace talks should be a major priority in resolving the unfolding and concerning the conflict.
Joyini also urged all parties to approach conflict resolution in the spirit of compromise.
“South Africa is of the view that this armed conflict, like all others, will result in unnecessary human suffering and destruction with global ramifications.
“In situations of conflict, the most vulnerable tend to suffer most, during and post the conflict.”

Deputy minister of international relations, Candith Mashego-Dlamini recently told parliament during a peace and security hybrid meeting that South Africa is encouraging dialogue between all stakeholders.
“South Africa is continuing to encouraged all parties to quiet diplomacy, with all relevant international mechanism such as the United Nations, including BRICS, to strengthen all diplomatic efforts to avoid an escalation of tension and work towards an inclusive, sustainable, and peaceful solution based on co-operation and dialogue.”
