Security at OR Tambo International Airport has been beefed up ahead of Cyril Ramaphosa’s inauguration as President.
This after Ramaphosa was re-elected as President of South Africa during the first sitting of the National Assembly at the Cape Town International Convention Centre last week.
Ramaphosa received 283 votes, against Julius Malema from the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), who received just 44.
This will be Ramaphosa’s second term in office, after receiving a nomination from the ANC’s Mdumiseni Ntuli, which was seconded by the IFP’s Velenkosini Hlabisa.
The Presidential inauguration ceremony is set to take place on Wednesday, 19 June at the Union Buildings in Pretoria.
A number of foreign Heads of State will be expected to attend the swearing in of Ramaphosa as President, and as such security at OR Tambo International Airport has been beefed up.
Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) says security systems are in place to welcome foreign Heads of State, and confirmed there will be complete and partial road closures around the airport precinct as a result.
ACSA’s Ntokozo Mazibuko urged passengers to factor this into their travel time from Tuesday, 18 June to Saturday, 22 June.
“There will be limited access to the airport precinct, including the cargo road and arrivals road due to several road closures and high police activity this week.
To properly manage the flow of traffic, kindly note that vehicles on airport roadways will be diverted by the Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department to the departures (upper) roadway, as well as parkade 2 south levels 2 and 3, for pickup and drop off purposes.”
