The governor of the South African Reserve Bank (SARB), Lesetja Kganyago, was unanimously elected to serve as the chancellor of Stellenbosch University (SU) on Friday.
He will be taking over the position from Justice Edwin Cameron whose term ended in December 2024.
Kganyago reportedly began his five-year term as chancellor on Friday, 24 January.
“Tertiary institutions have always played a pivotal role in shaping future leaders and driving social, economic, and cultural transformation in our country. As Chancellor of this dynamic institution,
I look forward to inspiring the next generation to realise their full potential and contribute meaningfully to the growth and development of our country and continent,” Kganyago said in a statement.
Lesetja Kganyago has held the following leadership roles over the last 10 years:
- Governor of the South African Reserve Bank (SARB): Appointed in 2014, he was reappointed for a second term in 2019. In this role, he oversees the country’s monetary policy, financial stability, and banking supervision.
- Chairman of the International Monetary and Financial Committee (IMFC): Served from 2018 to 2021, providing policy advice to the IMF Board of Governors.
- Chairman of the Committee of Central Bank Governors of the Southern African Development Community (SADC): Leads the SADC central banks in coordinating monetary policy and financial stability initiatives.
- Co-chair of the Financial Stability Board’s Regional Consultative Group for Sub-Saharan Africa: Works with other regional central banks to address financial stability challenges in the region.
