Rand Water has issued a warning of a system collapse due to high consumption across Gauteng metros.
In a statement issued on Sunday, 10 December the water utility said systems are constrained by the impact of heatwave patterns which has led to higher consumption in water.
Additionally, Rand Water says municipality debt is untenable and is calling for municipalities to decrease their debtors’ days.
“Currently, Rand Water is extracting above its water license and pumping at maximum thus provides more water to municipalities.
Accordingly, there is no additional water to be produced from Rand Water systems.
Approximately 80% of the water pumped by Rand Water goes to the Gauteng metros. The combined weekly consumption of the Gauteng metros from 27 November to 04 December is 11.8% higher than the set target, implying that the Metros continue to consume more water than their set targets.
Rand Water hereby cautions that should this high demand continue unabated, the water systems will eventually collapse. Rand Water is producing and pumping at full capacity and cannot add anymore water to the system, demand is outstripping supply.”

Several areas in Gauteng remain without water due to critically low towers and reservoirs. The Illovo tower is affected which has resulted in poor water pressure and no water to areas that feed from the tower.
Bryanston Reservoir is critically low and outlets are partially open to supply residents.
Other areas affected include Marlboro, Linbro Park, and Morningside.
