Johannesburg Water has blamed the hailstorms that hit parts of Johannesburg from Sunday evening, 15 October for further water problems at the Zuikerbosch plant.
In a statement issued on Monday, 16 October, Joburg Water said Rand Water’s Zuikerbosch Water Treatment Plant power lines were affected by a hailstorm, causing damage to key infrastructure and subsequently tripping the plant.
According to the water utility, this has put the bulk supplier’s Eikenhof and Palmiet systems under strain, affecting the stability of certain reservoirs in the network.
The following areas are likely to be affected:
- Palmiet System is showing a decline on reservoir levels in the Sandton system.
- Eikenhof System which feeds the Hursthill, Crosby and Brixton reservoirs is also affected, with the Randburg/Roodepoort areas already showing signs of strain.
Johannesburg Water says the system is being monitored and further updates will be communicated on the recovery of the impacted infrastructure.

Last week Kaya News reported that residents of Linmeyer in the south of Johannesburg are continuing their fight for water.
The area that has been without water for 64 days, claim water that is supposed to be directed to their homes, has been directed to a construction site.
Residents are concerned that there might be illegal water connections by the property developers.
On Friday, 13 October, Joburg Water said there was a slight improvement to the South Hills pump station which was affecting the area.
