President Cyril Ramaphosa has assured families affected by the George building collapse that government will help.
The President visited the fatal construction site on Thursday, 16 May and met with families of workers who were killed, and those who are still missing.
A week after the 5-storey apartment block which was under construction collapsed, the death toll from the fatal build has climbed to 33.
In an update on Friday, 17 May Disaster Management teams have handed over the site of the collapsed building to police for investigations.
The George search operations have now ended and the number of workers on site on that fateful day has once again been revised, and it has been reported that all workers have been accounted for.
Ramaphosa called for patience, saying the investigation will take time to complete and stressed that there must be accountability for this tragedy.
“Investigations are underway and they are going to cover every aspect that has given rise to this disaster.
We will make sure that no stone is left unturned, and where there needs to be accountability, it will be there.
The good thing is that everything is being done according to the book, not only according to our Constitution, but also according to the laws and the regulations from national, provinical, even at the local level.
Permitting systems and all those processes are being closely looked into, but it will take some time to fathom and get to the bottom, but I can assure you that the seriousness with which this matter is being given attention will lead to the truth coming out.”
With regards to repatriation efforts for foreign nationals who were working on the construction site, Ramaphosa said there were a number of organisations to assist families.
Ramaphosa said governments of the foreign nationals who lost their lives, including Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Malawi and Lesotho will also help with the repatriation efforts.
