President Cyril Ramaphosa has met with the leader of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), General Mohamed Dagalo, of the Republic of Sudan to engage on developments towards peace in Sudan.
Ramaphosa welcomed General Dagalo at the Mahlamba Ndlopfu official residence in Pretoria on Thursday, 04 January.
The briefing by General Dagalo commended the central role of the African Union and the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) under the chairship of Djibouti in mediating between the Sudan Armed Forces and the RSF.
This included the participation of the people of Sudan, and civil society in finding a lasting solution to the security and political challenges.
Conflict in Sudan between the RSF and the Sudan Armed Forces is ongoing, and comes with heavy economic ramifications.
Between 2003 to 2020, Sudan went through extreme conflict during former President Omar al-Bashir’s rule.
Clashes between the RSF and rebel groups continued, and as General Dagalo’s power grew, attempts to incorporate the RSF into the Sudan Armed Forces were unsuccessful.
In 2022, another power struggle ensued, and to date there has been no viable proof of resolution.
President Ramaphosa expressed South Africa’s support for the imminent face to face dialogue between General Dagalo and General Burhan and reiterated the need for an immediate ceasefire, and the dialogue towards permanent cessation of hostilities.
