Blade Nzimande, Minister of Higher Education, Science, and Innovation, has announced that Professor Lourens Van Staden has been appointed as the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) acting Chairperson effective immediately.
Van Staden who served as Tshwane University of Technology’s (TUT) vice chancellor before’s appointment comes after Ernest Khosa, the chairperson of the NSFAS Board, voluntarily submitted a notice of 30 days of leave of absence to the organization to address the accusations made against him in the recordings that the Organization Undoing Tax Abuse (OUTA) distributed.
Khosa and the Minister are accused by the OUTA of defrauding the program by accepting bribes from service providers.

Nzimande has said that he had a briefing session with Van Staden emphasising the importance of NSFAS to prioritise readiness for the begining of the of the 2024 acadeic year
“In light of the Chairperson of NSFAS having taken leave of absence, i have appointed Prof Van Staden, the former Vice Chancellor of the Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) as an Acting Chairperson of NSFAS with immediate effect.
I have already had a briefing session with him emphasising the importance of NSFAS to prioritise readiness for the begining of the of the 2024 acadeic year. The acting Chairperson will also priotise the employment of a new CEO and fully implement the Werksmans report that was commisioned by NSFAS.
