Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi’s memorial service and funeral have been confirmed by the late Inkatha Freedom Party founder’s family.
The Zulu Traditional Prime Minister will be remembered at a memorial service on Wednesday, 13 September, with daily prayer services being observed until his funeral on Friday, 15 September.
Buthelezi died on Saturday morning, 09 September at his home in Ulundi, KwaZulu-Natal, just a few days after being discharged from after a lengthy hospital stay.
His passing comes just two weeks after his 95th birthday, and tribute messages have been pouring in from many political leaders.
KZN Premier Nomusa Dube-Ncube said they are in talks with Presidency to apply for a National State funeral.
Prince Buthelezi’s relationship with the ANC was a contentious one, and he was accused of collaborating with the apartheid government in the 1980s and 1990s to stoke violence in townships.
Last year, City Press editor Mondli Makhanya wrote an opinion piece labelling Buthelezi a mass murderer.
Meanwhile, mourners have been gathering at the Kwa-Phindangene royal household from the morning to pay their respects to the family.
The Queen’s mother, Mavis MaZungu, wife of the late King Bhekzulu, as well as King Misizulu kaZwelithini’s siblings have also made an appearance on Monday.
Due to cultural practices, the King cannot pay his respects, nor attend the funeral of the late Prince.
Further details about Prince Buthelezi’s memorial service and funeral will be updated when made available.
