President Cyril Ramaphosa is calling on all South Africans to vote in the upcoming National and Provincial elections on 29 May.
In a video by Presidency, Ramaphosa reflected on the 30-years since democracy and reminded citizens why their vote is important.
“Many of us remember the historic election day in 1994 when we voted for a democratic government of our choice.
We all remember how we felt when we stood in long queues, patiently waiting to cast our votes.
As we cast our votes, we were mindful of the weight of history. We were mindful of the fact that so many people had struggled and sacrificed for this right to vote, and many had lost their lives for the cause of freedom.
The right to vote has been the cornerstone in our democratic order, and it’s enshrined in the Bill of Rights in our Constitution.
As you cast your vote in a special vote on 27 and 28 May, and for many of us on 29 May, you will be demonstrating your faith in our democratic order.”
Ramaphosa’s message to South Africans was a stark reminder of how far the country has come since apartheid, and echoed how much work still needs to be done for a better future.
This year’s elections will be a turning point in the country’s history, as for the first time Independent Candidates are running in both the National and Provincial elections.
There will be 70 political parties contesting the elections and 11 Independent Canddates, of these 31 will be running for office.
