The Presidency has denied the request to grant slain musician AKA a state funeral, says Panyaza Lesufi.
Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi revealed on Thursday that his office was not successful in its request for the Presidency to grant AKA, real name Kiernan Forbes, a state funeral.
Speaking to Newzroom Afrika outside AKA’s Johannesburg home, Lesufi said AKA will be “buried in a secluded venue with leaders, heroes, and heroines of our society”.
The province will also provide security support to the family.
“We felt that a person of his international and national stature deserves some form of honour and we want to clarify it is not a financial contribution but an honour of draping the coffin and ensuring the flag flies at half-mast and ensuring that it [is] a befitting funeral.”
AKA will be laid to rest at a private provincial funeral on Saturday, 18 February.
