Public Enterprises Minister, Pravin Gordhan says a restructure of the Eskom board is on the horizon.
Speaking on Tuesday, 27 September, Gordhan said an announcement will be made in due course but the current Eskom board were made aware of his decision.
Pravin Gordhan has received heavy criticism for his managing of the power crisis in the country and his excuse that loadshedding is a result of systemic apartheid.
However, Gordhan has made the promise of an Eskom board review to South Africans before.
According to Gordhan, the Eskom board will be “reconstituted and restructured” soon and board members will be informed of the outcome of the process.
There are currently only 6 non-executive directors at Eskom, although there is provision for a maximum of 13 members.
Seven board members have resigned and none of them have been replaced since the first resigned in 2018.
However, with the deep-rooted issues at the power utility amid the worst loadshedding the country has ever experienced, pressure on Gordhan to replace the entire board is mounting.
The EFF in particular have been vocal about Eskom CEO, Andre de Ruyter, COO Jan Oberholzer and the entire Eskom board stepping down.
Gordhan has not given any indication if de Ruyter and Oberholzer will be fired.
