A policewoman has been brutally attacked, allegedly by her ex wielding a hammer.
This according to the South African Police Services who confirmed the 43-year Sergeant was attacked at her police living quarters on Sunday, 26 March.
The Sergeant was on her way to the SAPS offices in Grahamstown at approximately 05h40 when she was allegedly ambushed by her ex boyfriend.
Her attacker repeatedly gave her blows to her head and hands. The officer tried to run back to her quarters and escape her attacker, but the man managed to retrieve her firearm.
Thankfully the shot he fired at her missed, and the officer’s alleged ex made off with her weapon.
The Sergeant remains in hospital with serious injuries.
According to police, while a manhunt for the suspect ensued, the man was reportedly found with a fatal gunshot wound in Orgley Street.
It is believed the man shot and killed himself.
SAPS has condemned the attack and appealed to the public to stop carrying out acts of gender-based violence.
“We are appealing to everyone on all levels of society to stand together with the police to stop these ruthless attacks. The high number of GBV cases in our communities including within our organisation sounds a clarion call for everyone to ensure that the most vulnerable do not suffer abuse or violence and for people to come forward and report such abuse or threat of physical violence.”
