The owner of two pit bulls that mauled a three-year old Free State toddler to death over the weekend has appeared in court.
Police arrested 21-year old Lebohang Pali shortly after the child was pronounced dead on the scene on Sunday, 20 November.
This after angry neighbours demanded that the dog’s owner be held accountable for the horrific circumstances of the child’s death.
Three-year old Keketso Innocent Saule was playing outside when the dogs attacked and mauled him to death.
Saule had sustained severe injuries to his face and head from the attack, just a week after another child was killed by a pit bull in Bloemfontein.
Lebohang Pali was charged with offences relating to the Animals Amendments Act.
The matter has been postponed until Wednesday, 23 November.
Police confirm that Pali’s dogs were taken away following the incident to prevent the community from hurting the animals.
As was the case in Cape Town on Sunday where angry residents stoned, stabbed and burnt 3 pit bulls to death after another child was mauled.
The three-year old from Gatesfield, Cape Town sustained severe injuries and was rushed to hospital for treatment.
With an increase in pit bull attacks on children across the country, there have been renewed calls for the breed to be banned.
