South Africa’s Parliament has officially established an ad hoc committee to investigate serious allegations concerning security matters, made by KwaZulu-Natal’s provincial police commissioner, Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi.
The move follows the National Assembly’s adoption of a joint report from the portfolio committees on police and on justice and constitutional development.
The resolution was passed on 23 July, after which the committees requested that the investigation be concluded within 90 days. An extension to this timeframe can be granted if required.
The ad hoc committee, comprising a diverse group of members from across the political spectrum, is now tasked with scrutinising Mkhwanazi’s claims.
Key members of the committee include prominent figures such as Glynnis Breytenbach, Ian Cameron, Julius Malema, and Mdumiseni Ntuli.
