NSFAS to process up to R4.2 billion as an upfront payment to tertiary institutions.
The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) will be processing up to R4.2 billion as an upfront payment to tertiary institutions.
Blade Nzimande, the minister of higher education and training, made this announcement while speaking to the media on Tuesday about the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) and university preparedness amid the start of university registration week.
As of January 21, NSFAS had received 1,545,822 applications for this academic year, according to Nzimande. 657,703 of these were provisionally funded Sassa recipients.
Before this year’s application cycle ends on January 31, he stated that NSFAS expects more applications. Some universities owe the fund millions, and the debt dates back to 2017.

Nzimande stated that the nation was now investing in education at a rate of at least 7% of GDP, which was higher than advised. He also declared that, as of the following year, NSFAS would no longer be available to students who do not achieve a 60% course average.
